The HIT Book

The book “Pioneers on the Information Highway – A History of Information Technology at UNB 1958-2008” is now available on Amazon.ca.

The book’s roots go back to the History of Information Technology at UNB (HIT) project. From 2014 to 2020 the HIT Team conducted interviews and collected documents, artifacts, and photos; then used this material to create this web site (https://hit.lib.unb.ca).

In 2021 Janice and I decided to write a book based on the HIT data. After two years of conducting additional interviews, writing, re-writing, transcribing, verifying, editing, and proofing (totaling somewhere around 5,000 manhours), the book has been published. The resulting paperback is 8” x 10” in format and 565 pages long including a foreword by Frank McKenna, interviews, submitted stories, and quite a few photos (many of them printed in color much to our surprise). The price set by Amazon Price is around $47.00 CDN but seems to change from time to time.

An E-book version is also available for $24.50. The e-book has at least two advantages beyond being cheaper to purchase than the paperback – the search feature and the capability to change font size. It wasn’t easy to figure out all the many details when publishing with Amazon but generally the process went smoothly and is very affordable. We strongly recommend it.

A very special thank you goes to my co-author Janice El-Bayoumi and to two amazing volunteers and UNBREA members: editor Bev Bramble (who also handled the publishing) and proof-reader Janet Moss. My thanks also go out to all the many other individuals who contributed to making the HIT book possible.

Note that all profits from the sale of the book go to UNB. Also note that the book is not intended to be read cover to cover. Instead, you are encouraged to read those sections that most interest you first and then the rest as time permits.

Please report any errors. We are quite certain there are still a few to be found. We can easily update and re-publish the book at any time thanks to print-on-demand.

Greg.
